What Should I Know Before Speed Dating?

If you've booked — or are considering booking — your place at a Slow Dating event, you may be wondering; what should I know before speed dating? In this article, we'll explain what you can expect, so you feel fully prepared ahead of time.

Speed dating success stories

Firstly, it's important to know that speed dating works. This will help you bring a positive and optimistic attitude. While cynicism has its place, it's not a great way to approach speed dating, as it can cause you to exude offputting negativity that's picked up by potential matches. And the stats speak for themselves... 90% of our attendees say they would recommend us, and 80% match with someone after just one event. Have a read of our success stories. Hearing from the real-life people who've tried, and loved it, is one of the best ways to build your confidence in the process.

What sort of people go speed dating?

We match people from all locations and walks of life. As there's a requirement to book and pay for an event, speed dating doesn't appeal to timewasters, in the same way a free app might. Events are categorised according to location and age, so you'll be meeting those within your own generation and area; at least 10 eligible singles, often more. You can browse our Slow Dating testimonials, to get a feel for the kind of attendees you can expect to meet.

What can I expect at speed dating?

We understand that dating in any form can be daunting and turning up to an event on your own can cause a level of anxiety. Our events are designed to reduce this as much as possible, with experienced hosts who know how to put everyone at ease. You'll be welcomed on arrival, with every step explained as it happens. Attendees take a seat on two long rows, separated by tables. A bell rings and the first 'date' commences. Each lasts for four minutes (long enough to gauge the essence of a person and find out some things about them, but not so long that it ever becomes awkward. When the bell rings again, the men move along one place. This repeats until everyone had had their chance to meet and get to know one another.

Do people go to speed dating alone?

Usually, yes. You can of course enlist some pals to come with you; single friends can book a place and take part, and those who are coupled up can provide background moral support from the bar. But you definitely don't need a wing-man or woman on the night. In fact, you may be more likely to mingle afterwards if it's just you. Plus it can be offputting to feel like your mates are watching on. And you won't run the risk of matching with the same person.

How to prepare for speed dating

There's actually very little you need to do. But the things that are worth considering are:

  • What you'll chat about (having a few ice breakers and questions up your sleeve will cover this)
  • How you'll get there (check travel times so you can arrive in plenty of time)
  • What you'll wear (opt for smart casual, flattering attire that reflects your personality)

Those who are feeling particularly nervous may benefit from practising some relaxation techniques, or chatting through any apprehension with family or friends.

Speed dating follow ups

So what happens afterwards?
You'll tick the people you're interested in seeing again, using our software. Then, within 24 hours you'll be able to access a full run down of your matches via your online account and you'll be forwarded the contact details of your matches. In the meantime, you'll receive emails and texts as soon as someone you've ticked, ticks you. After this, the ball is in your court. We recommend getting straight on it and dropping them a message once you've matched, to keep momentum. And do be sure to arrange another date. Meeting up again face to face, is the best way to progress.

Would you like to become one of our success stories? Sign up for a Slow Dating event and find out for yourself what speed dating is like. Remember that finding love doesn't have to be something that happens to other people. Be proactive and open to what could be and you may find your life partner is just around the corner.

Related Questions

What should I bring to a speed dating event?

Just yourself! While it's worth having a few questions prepared, we don't advise that you write them down as reading them would come across as overly formal. If you want to have a drink or two, bring a payment method or some cash. And if you have your smartphone, you'll be able to enter your ticks as soon as you've finished, or on on the way home.

How long do you talk during speed dating?

Each date lasts four minutes, so be mindful to occupy around half of that. Try not to monopolise the chat, but be sure to get something of yourself across. It may be worth practising with a friend and a timer, to get used to how that length of conversation feels.

What do you do after speed dating?

You have the option to stick around, continue the chat and mingle with other attendees with a few drinks at the bar. Don't worry, if you hate the idea of freestyling your dating, you can head home as soon as it ends, enter your ticks and focus on some one one one meets once you have your matches.
