7 Dates to Try in Glasgow This Autumn

Nature’s colours are changing, the leaves are crunching below our feet and the clocks have gone back. We’re fully in the throes of fall and are excited to make the most of it in Scotland before we move into winter come December. So here are 7 seasonal dates to try in Glasgow this autumn.

1 GlasGLOW

You’ll have to be quick off the mark with this one, as it only runs till the 13th of November. And the mesmerising annual light installation promenade show is one not to be missed. This year’s extravaganza is entitled The Land That Time Forgot; while the dinosaur theme is obviously very appealing for families, it’s an immersive marvel for all ages and a technological work of art. As you weave your way through the already gorgeous Botanic Gardens after dark, you’ll be met with many sights and sounds that will amaze you. There’s a cosy spot to roast marshmallows over firepits too, which makes for a super romantic and cute date night. Book one of the latest slots midweek if you prefer a more grown-up vibe.

2 Park walks

The city has an abundance of green spaces (which is why it’s been dubbed the Dear Green Place). Many of them are best enjoyed as they turn to shades of russet and golden brown. Try one outside of your usual patch — Linn Park on the Southside is super leafy, so an ideal place to soak in autumnal vibes, with waterfalls perfect for couples’ selfies. If you’re planning a first date, somewhere like Victoria Park to the northwest will be a better choice; it’s a very open and busy space with enough room to roam, but always within sight of plenty of other people. Plus it has lots of pondside benches for you to sit and chat awhile, as well as nearby coffee shops and bars on Crow Road to continue the date if all goes well.

3 Dome Dining under the stars

Those who’ve passed along the Great Western Road after dark during the last few weeks may have noticed illuminated, transparent igloo-type structures situated outside 1051 GWR. The bar and grill are housed in Kelvinside’s former railway station building (hence the name), and the domes erected outside provide a wonderful outlook onto the period property. As the weather can be unpredictable at this time of the year, a covered dome enables you to enjoy the magic of the outdoors, but with a Dyson heater — and without any risk of downpours! You can tuck into some dishes prepared using super fresh fish and shellfish from Scotland’s coastal ports, locally reared and dry-aged beef, seasonal Scottish veg and produce from one of the country’s oldest dairy farmers. Prepare a bespoke playlist for your posh dinner date, as you’ll have an in-dome BlueTooth speaker.

4 Coorie doon with a cocktail

If you’re not familiar with the phrase, “coorie doon” is Scots to describe snuggling or settling in. With a wealth of trendy candlelit, atmospheric bars and speakeasies, Glasgow provides plenty of opportunities to get cosy together with an imaginative beverage. Many venues provide unusual and seasonal drinks lists, incorporating autumnal botanicals. Head to the city centre, Finnieston’s strip or Shawlands for the coolest hangouts.

5 Ice skating

Prefer your dates like an American movie? Then get your skates on and head to Kelvingrove at the end of the month, where you can hit the ice and show off your moves. The annual event (Elfingrove) is covered and purpose-built, becoming the UK’s biggest ice rink. Skate Lates is from 9 pm and reserved for adults only, after which you can grab a Boozy Bailey’s Hot Choc at the Apres Skate Bar. Those wanting to get into the spirit but without feeling like Bambi on ice can book a table for dinner, right beside the rink; you’ll have table service and front-row views of the action.

7 An outdoor spa

Yes, you read correctly — an OUTDOOR spa in Scotland. The good folks at The Blythswood have long been rejuvenating city dwellers with their indoor hydrotherapy circuit. But now they’re taking it alfresco, with THAW popping up in the period building’s courtyard. Non-resident guests can book a treatment or the Unwind and Dine package, including use of the hot tub, chill-out, sauna and steam room spaces in the garden.

Don’t let the cooler temperatures and longer nights get you down — instead, harness all the wonder and fun of the season by giving these dates a try in Glasgow this autumn.
